Hamburg, 02/15/2017 | Press Release | Company Olympus invests heavily in Hamburg:

The medical technology manufacturer is constructing a new building in the City Süd and enlarging its development and manufacturing center in Jenfeld.

Olympus is growing, and is massively expanding its Hamburg site. In the Hammerbrook district, the company is constructing a new building for marketing and sales of its products in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and for Olympus Deutschland GmbH. In Jenfeld, it is expanding its European development and manufacturing center for medical technology. This is one of the biggest construction investments by a single company in Hamburg in recent years. It is planned that the new building in City Süd will be ready by 2020. The architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) from Hamburg is responsible for the design.

More space, an inspiring working environment and modern architecture will combine to offer current and future employees a state-of-the-art working environment in the new company headquarters. With everything from open space to "retreat" areas, right through to cafés and sports facilities, the offices will fully satisfy the needs of modern working.

“With new buildings in Hammerbrook and Jenfeld, we are making a clear commitment to Hamburg as its biggest Japanese employer.” Stefan Kaufmann, Executive Managing Director

The new building is Olympus's response to its target growth. "Based on the trend in recent years, we are planning strategic, global growth of six percent per year until 2021. The new building takes this development into consideration and will offer our employees a modern and inspiring working environment," says Stefan Kaufmann, Executive Managing Director, Olympus Europa. "At the same time, with new buildings in Hammerbrook and Jenfeld, we are making a clear commitment to Hamburg as its biggest Japanese employer."

There's more good news for Hamburg, as Olympus is recruiting and is planning to offer up to five percent more jobs per year in the areas of marketing, sales and service, research & development and also production – predominantly in medical technology. The extra jobs have been considered in the expansion plans. "We are pleased that Olympus, as an important employer in Hamburg, is making further investments in its site," says Prof. Jörn Walter, Chief Planning Director for the City of Hamburg. "The new building is not only an architecturally successful addition to Heidenkampsweg, it is also an important milestone in the development of the district of Hammerbrook, as in the long-term it is intended that a mixed area of commercial and additional residential-use buildings will be created here."

New company headquarters at Wendenstrasse

The Poseidon House

The new company headquarters is being constructed on the plot between Heidenkampsweg, Wendenstrasse and Sachsenstrasse. It covers a total area of 55,000 square meters. In order to construct the new headquarters, all buildings currently in use will be demolished, as it would have been too expensive to modernize them. The employees will temporarily move into the Poseidonhaus on Amsinckstrasse, also in Hammerbrook, where Olympus signed a contract to lease 23,800 square meters last year.

Part of the new building in City Süd will also be a state-of-the-art training center. The need for further training is increasing, in particular due to Olympus's advances in the area of surgical devices. It is intended that employees from throughout the EMEA region will receive training at the new headquarters in future.

The architectural firm Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) from Hamburg is responsible for the new company headquarters. The internationally active firm is known for its design services in all architectural and urban development disciplines. During the review process, gmp beat off competition from three other firms. It provided the strongest architectural design. The submissions were assessed by a committee of civic representatives, the Olympus board and project managers from Olympus.

European development and manufacturing center at Kuehnstrasse

The European development and manufacturing center at Kuehnstrasse will be expanded by 20,000 square meters by summer 2018. "This is where we will be developing medical technology of tomorrow for the global market," says Kaufmann. "We are strengthening our development and manufacturing expertise in rigid endoscopy, bipolar high-frequency surgery, system integration and instrument preparation at the Hamburg site, and will therefore be contributing to our global growth in medical technology from Hamburg."
